A Hot Toddy on a Cold Night

With most of the country blanketed in snow and ice, it's nice to sit down in the evening and enjoy a hot drink to warm you up. I'm here in sunny Florida, but am struggling with a chest cold, so a Hot Toddy might be just the thing to make me feel a little better.

What? You never considered tequila in a Hot Toddy? Well, you're in for a real treat with this CranApple Toddy using Dobel Tequila.

A New Year's Eve Party with Segura Viudas

You know how I LOVE my bubbly, but did you know that \while I love a flute of sparkling grapes, that I generally don't serve champagne when I have a crowd? For the holidays and quite a few of my parties, you'll notice that I serve Cava rather than champagne. At a much lower price point, Segura Viudus Brut Reserva is a high quality reserve cava that it is made in the same method as champagne (and aged for at least 3 years).

Personally, I'd rather serve an exquisite cava for $10 a bottle (yes, that's how much Segura Viudus Brut Reserva is) vs. a CHEAP champagne...and by the way, there's NOTHING worse than a cheap champagne.

This wonderful cava has a clean, delicate flavor with a creaminess that will have you coming back for more.

  • The House of Segura Viudas is located in the Penedès region of Spain, just west of Barcelona
  • At Segura Viudas, an unusually customized, labor intensive approach to cava making continues to set their wines apartWidely recognized as one of the top cava producers, Segura Viudas is consistently acknowledged for releasing some of Spain’s finest “artisan” sparkling wines.
  • They focus on crafting artisan cavas in the traditional method, meaning that the wine goes through a second fermentation in the bottle
  • Cava is Spain’s sparkling wine
  • All Segura Viudas cavas are made in the same method used to make champagne
  • They focus on using the native grapes of the region, the traditional cava grapes:
           *Macabeo (mack-a-BAY-oh), Xarel-lo (shar-EL-oh) and Parellada (par-el-YA-dah)

For more information visit SeguraViudasUSA.com for holiday entertaining ideas and sparkling wine cocktail recipes or call1.888.706.2229 and give the operator your zip code to find a store near you.

Segura Viudas would also like to offer a New Year’s Eve Party Kit as a giveaway for 3 of Champagne Living's readers that includes:

  • 13 Red Top Hats
  • 12 Red Tiaras
  •  24 Red Foil Horns
  • 12 Gold Beaded Necklaces
  • 24 Red Balloons
  • 1 Gold Ribbon Egg
  • 100 Red & Gold Confetti Stars (3 inch)

Since New Year's Eve is almost here. This giveaway will only run for 24 hours!

Raise a glass of Galil Mountain Winery Viognier for the holidays

I swear I have a TOUGH job. I have to be an example of HOW to live the good life day in and day out. Traveling, learning about spa treatments, figuring out WHO is having the best sale, what beauty products REALLY work and tonight....tonight I have the really difficult task of tasting a new wine. So, if by the end of this post, the words start looking like gibberish, you know I'm doing a GOOD job.

Interestingly, I've always thought that viogniers were only grown in the Rhone region, so I was surprised to learn that the normally difficult to grow grapes in Galil Mountain Winery's 2008 Viognier are actually from Galilee (yes, THAT Galilee...in Northern Israel).

Galil's Viognier 2008 is medium bodied with a citrusy flavor and a finish that lingers for a few seconds on the tongue. It's light golden, almost clear color and silky texture will be a great complement to your holiday turkey or Chanukah meal of blintzes and latkes. I'm sitting here drinking it with some cheese and pieces of fresh fruit, relaxing after my day. They say that it would be perfect with dried fruit or Asian dishes, but since that wasn't tonight's plan...I'll have to make certain that I leave a little for tomorrow (maybe I'll make a quick stir fry to accompany the wine).

The Galil Mountain Winery sits atop the Upper Galilee mountain range, where there is a 2,000 year old history of winemaking. The winery has a total of five vineyards in the region and 90% of the grapes  and are reds, used in Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc. with only a smaller amount making the Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The Galil Mountain Winery is known as the most innovative in Israel because of it's progressive, ecologically-responsible design. So, you can feel good about supporting their venture.

Okay, so I'm no oenophile, but I do know what I enjoy and I'm suggesting that this would be the perfect wine to serve for your holiday celebration (Chanukah or Christmas). At around $15.00 a bottle, it would also make a nice gift for any wine lover on your list.

I received a bottle of wine for this review, all opinions are strictly my own.

10 Tips for safer road travel this holiday season

Once again, my friends at Rand McNally are thinking about road travel. With the holidays coming quickly and the weather turning worse, there are sometimes treacherous winter driving conditions. Stay safe this holiday season when driving to grandma's house to celebrate.

1. Know the differences among various winter weather advisories. The National Weather Service issues several cautions; understand what they mean before you hit the road:

   a. Winter weather advisories are for conditions that may be hazardous, but should not become life threatening when using caution.
   b. Winter storm watches mean that severe winter conditions may affect your area and are issued   12-36 hours in advance of major storms.
   c. Winter storm warnings mean a storm bringing four or more inches of snow/sleet is expected in the next 12 hours, or six or more inches in 24 hours.
   d. Blizzard warnings mean snow and strong winds will produce blinding snow, deep drifts, and a life-threatening wind chill.

2. Let someone know your timetable and travel route. This is especially important if you'll be driving in areas with little traffic, rural locations, or large park areas.

3. Prevention is the best medicine: Driving slowly and maintaining plenty of room between you and the next car is the easiest way to avoid accidents. We all want to get to Christmas dinner faster but that extra 30 minutes could save your life. In bad weather, allow for three-to-12 times more stopping distance depending on the size of your vehicle.

4. Stock your car with a shovel, broom, ice scraper, jumper cables, blankets, flashlight, warning devices (flares), sand or kitty litter, and high-calorie non-perishable food.

5. Keep spare, charged batteries for cell phones in your car. Duracell and others make instant chargers for popular phones such as the iPhone. If your car battery dies, you will be glad you spent the extra $15 to reach help. If you regularly travel to very remote areas where cell towers are few and far between, consider investing in a satellite telephone or an in-car service like On-Star.

6. Keep your gas tank full to prevent the fuel line from freezing. Also, make sure the windshield wiper fluid reservoir is full.

7. Check to make sure your lights and windshield wipers are functioning properly. In most states it is illegal to drive if either is malfunctioning; and in certain weather situations it is also extremely unsafe.

8. Know your health insurance plan's emergency care policies. What kind of doctors can you visit? If you have in-network benefits what happens if you need medical care beyond your home city or state? Are you charged differently for treatment at a hospital emergency room (without being admitted) or an emergency walk-in clinic?

For more travel suggestions, or for maps and directions, visit www.randmcnally.com

9. If you get stuck in the snow, stay in your car – it’s your best shelter. Don’t leave unless help is within 100 yards.

10. Nearly 60% of accidents are the result of improper driving. Whether you've had a bit too much pie or a bit too much pilsner, don't drive until you are fully awake and not impaired by anything. Most adults know well enough not to drink and drive, but few realize accidents are just as easily caused by being drowsy or impaired by legal drugs like cold medicines. When in doubt, pull to the side of the road or check into a motel for a quick nap.

***And a bonus point: carry a first aid kit in the car with you. This is especially important if you have children or the elderly riding with you.

Nelly - Bud Light Port Paradise

This past Saturday, I had the privilege of attending a private concert on Royal Caribbean's Coco Cay in the Bahamas as part of the Bud Light Port Paradise cruise. We had been told that Stone Temple Pilots would be performing, but they backed out at the last minute due to a conflict in their schedule.

Who could they get to perform at the last minute? NO ONE expected this....

NELLY

I'll have more for you soon!

Thank you to Bud Light for providing this wonderful trip and concert.

5 Ways to survive the holiday party season as a guest

1. Make guests comfortable with a warm, welcoming ambience. Inspire holiday cheer with a lit fireplace, candles, festive place settings and inviting decorative elements. If you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, create seating arrangements in advance so as to avoid any potentially awkward pairings.

2. “A Case Just in Case”: Always be prepared for the unexpected gift or a last minute invitation - have a case of HALL wine on hand for hostess or reciprocal gifts. This holiday season, HALL Wines is offering cases of their highly rated varietals, with prices starting at $432.

3. Don’t overstay your welcome. Don’t linger or reach for another drink when your hosts are already cleaning up; take the hint if you’re being shooed out or if the crowd is beginning to thin.

4. Bring two different wines. Everyone has a different palate – and tasting different wines side by side adds a conversational element to any dinner party. Gifting two different varietals will satisfy tastes and evoke dialogue about preferences.

5. A short ‘Thank You’ goes a long way. A hand-written note or a phone call to your hosts shows your appreciation for the invitation, while acknowledging all their hard work. Always make your note personal, mentioning a specific aspect of the party that you particularly enjoyed.

Hosts or Hostesses -  A great way to REALLY enjoy the holiday is by pouring your guests a 2007 HALL Kathryn Hall Cabernet Sauvignon. The wonderfully dark, dense, powerful character of this wine is distinctive of the fruit from the renowned Sacrashe vineyard and available nationally ($75 SRP).

Thank you to  expert entertainer. Ambassador Kathryn Hall, former liaison to Austria from 1997 to 2001, and hostess of countless politicians and power players over the years as well as attending her fair share of both high-profile and intimate gathering for these tips  She is the owner and vintner of HALL Wines (Napa Valley – www.hallwines.com), Ambassador Hall is constantly accommodating visitors at her acclaimed winery

Share a little romance at Chili's

There's something about dining out casually that's so EASY. No reservations, no getting dressed up, and most of all NO COOKING. Sharing a date with your honey or going out with a girlfriend and catching up over dinner are some of my favorite things to do.

When we want something casual and consistent we quite often end up at a nearby Chili's. We enjoy sitting at the high tops in the bar area....remember...this is casual day at the mansion.

Mr. S and I went to see The Social Network (the Facebook movie), and grab a quick meal at the Chili's next to the movie theater just before I left for Blog World Expo last earlier last week.  I wanted to check out their new Double Up on Flavor menu that I'd been hearing so much about lately.

This is a great new option that Chili's is offering. For only $20 you can choose two full-size entrees from the special Double Up on Flavor menu and an appetizer to split. That was about the same as ONE MOVIE ADMISSION was.

I was actually surprised to see  some of my favorites on the special menu. The choices for entrees range from the Quesadilla Explosion Salad (my fave) to a Basic Bacon Burger and even Baby Back Ribs. Mr. S and I decided to split an order of the fried cheese and Mr. S was in the mood for the Crispy Chicken Crispers and I tried the Margarita Grilled Chicken. YUM!!!!!

I love the fact that I can go out to dinner for LESS than it costs to cook. At $10 each I could eat at Chili's a FEW times a week.

Chili's is running a FUN promotion where you can Shout Out to Eat Out. Simply go to the Shout Out to Eat Out website and upload a photo of you and the person that you'd like to take to Chili's with you. There will be a new winner daily through 10/31 to win a $20 Chili's gift card (just the right amount for that great dinner for 2 menu).

You can also win a $20 Chili's gift card right here on Champagne Living!

I received a gift card in order to try the new menu at Chili's, all opinions are strictly my own.

I love having choices - Wendy's

I have food envy.

My mother in law used to use that phrase a lot when we'd go out to dinner. It meant that whatever she'd order for her meal, she always wanted what someone else was eating. Lately I've realized that I may have a bit of food envy as well. While I may be craving a burger, that salad that Ava is having looks good to me too, so I second guess my choice.

With Wendy's new pick 2 menu there are options. You can have a little bit of this and a little of that (without the guilt of ordering MORE than you can eat).

For example: Yesterday for lunch I had a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger paired with the Baja Salad.

There are 28 possible combinations in all. Simply choose a half size salad and something else from the You Pick Two Menu for only $4.99.  The price is right, the size is right and the food envy is GONE. Well, except that hubby got a Cobb Salad and Chili and I wanted some of his as well :-)

If you struggle with food envy (or just making a decision between one meal or another), I think that you're going to like Wendy's new Pick 2 offerings. Oh and the SALADS are AMAZING. The Baja Salad was spicy and crunch and so good, that I actually am going back for another tomorrow.

Want to try a Pick 2 combo for yourself? Simply enter to win one below.

Thank you to Wendy's for providing a gift card in order to try the new Pick 2 combinations. All opinions are my own.

    Movies on Demand

I must have been living in the dark ages, because I walked into the bedroom to find my husband watching what I thought was a new DVD release. Now, I know that we no longer subscribe to Netflix and he has NO clue how to use the Roku and buy/stream movies (he usually asks me to set it up for him). He hadn't left the house in over 24 hours - so how did he get this movie?

Well, it turns out he had purchased a Movie on Demand from our cable company.. That part is no surprise, but the fact that it was a movie that had just been released this week threw me.

Today, I open my e-mail and found that I received a note about the movie Letters to Juliet (which I've been wanting to see) being available from Movies on Demand beginning September 14th. - which is it's RELEASE DAY. I'm LOVING this.

Am I the only one who just realized that we can do this? This is like having a Cable Video Store at your disposal 24/7.

If I hear of any other great flicks coming directly to Movies on Demand, I'll let you know. With winter storms (and driving rains here in Florida) on the way, what better way to relax and enjoy a movie without having to leave the house.

For more information about Letters to Juliet or Movies on Demand check out these sites.
